Pantomines and nativity plays were produced at the hospital each year by deputy Matron, Mary Parkin. She also often composed suitable music, and took part in the plays herself. Mary Parkin:- Born in Sheffield -went to Toronto where she grew up; but after the father left home they deported back to England - returning to Sheffield Mary trained as a nurse, specialising in mental health and obtained a distinction in her exams. Mary stayed at Wadsley Asylum (or South Yorkshire Mental Hospital) for most of her career, going elsewhere mainly for additional training and became Deputy Matron. She was offered the Matron's job but declined as she wanted to stay nearer the patients. The matron was Edna Stevenson and the two were great friends on into retirement.
